CAMHS Locum Consultant Psychiatrist (N&S MCCAED) South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

We are inviting applications for an exciting full-time (10PA), Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist post in the Maudsley Centre for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders (MCCAED). This will be a Fixed Term post for 6 months. The post would be of particular benefit for an applicant interested in developing their knowledge, experience, and skills in eating disorders, before the post is advertised as a substantive MCCAED consultant psychiatrist post, likely to be full-time.

This post would be suitable for a wide range of psychiatrists, especially those with a background in eating disorders and/or community CAMHS. In addition to extensive opportunities to develop clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in child and adolescent eating disorders, there are also excellent opportunities for quality improvement activities, research, teaching, and training.

The purpose of the post would be to contribute to the clinical leadership of the MCCAED. The post-holder would support delivery of effective specialist child adolescent eating disorder care, in accordance with the evidence base for eating disorders and national guidance, and in collaboration with other consultants in the service.

Main Duties of the Job

This post will be primarily to provide clinical and strategic leadership parts in collaboration with other consultants in the service to Intensive Treatment Programme and Outpatient Eating Disorder team, whilst also being encouraged to make their own unique contribution.

The post-holder would support delivery of effective specialist child adolescent eating disorder care, and in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

The post-holder would be expected to play a key role in providing consultation and advice to colleagues within and outside the team, especially with complex cases; psychiatric and medical assessments of children and adolescents, prescribing and monitoring medication, and supporting the delivery of services in accordance with Trust Clinical Governance and NICE guidance policies. The post-holder may also be required to supervise a specialty doctor and psychiatric trainees.

Job Responsibilities
  • Ensure effective communication with referring and receiving teams throughout the Trust and into Primary Care.
  • Maintain good open relations with all clinical team members to provide consultation and discussion of cases around the management of psychiatric issues.
  • Participate in care planning and treatment formulation, providing guidance on evidence-based treatment and their effectiveness.
  • Join other team members in the assessment and treatment of complex cases.
  • Be responsible for prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medication.
  • Support delivery and innovation of family therapy and multifamily therapy for eating disorders.
  • Support all research and quality improvement studies taken by the service.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • MRCPsych or equivalent (A/I)
  • CCT (A/I)
  • Full GMC Registration & inclusion on Specialist GMC Register (A/I)
  • Sec 12 (2) and AC approved (or undertaking to obtain this before taking up the post) (A/I)
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent (A/I)
  • Higher degree or additional qualifications
Training and Experience
  • Completion of Higher Psychiatric Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (A/I)
  • Equivalent training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CESR issued by PMETB) (A/I)
  • Experience in psychopharmacology and assessing + treating complex eating disorders with associated comorbidities.
  • Experience in clinical leadership and service development (A/I)
  • Experience in relevant therapeutic practice e.g. DBT, CBT or Family Therapy (A/I)
  • Experience of psychopharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities in children with mental illness and autism and physical illness (A/I)
  • Experience in Paediatrics (A/I)
  • Experience in delivering psychotherapy for eating disorders (A/I)
  • Experience in the use of ADOS, ADI-r (A/I)
Clinical Experience
  • Demonstrated clinical skills in specialist area of eating disorders, autism, OCD, anxiety disorders and psychopharmacology (A/I)
  • Demonstrated clinical skills in child and adolescent psychiatry (A/I)
  • Experience in dealing with children with eating disorders and associated comorbidities in community day programmes and inpatient settings (A/I)
  • Advanced knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for young people with eating disorders and their families (A/I)
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatment interventions for young people with eating disorders of all classifications. (A/I)
  • Competence in physical assessments (A/I)
  • Experience and knowledge of multi-disciplinary, multi-agency working with children with complex, multi-system disease (A/I)
  • Experience of safeguarding, governance and legislation issues specific to children with eating disorders and associated comorbidities (A/I)
  • Experience working in specialist eating disorders teams and co-working with social care and education. (A/I)
  • Competence in risk management (A/I)
  • Competence in non-medication therapeutic approaches (A/I)
  • Evidence-based practice (A/I)
  • Compliance with national and professional guidelines (A/I)
Management

  • Demonstrable academic achievements to support allocation of Research time in job plan
  • Publication(s) accepted by peer review journals in a relevant academic field
  • Presentation at a national or international conference (A/I)
  • Publication in a peer-reviewed journal (A/I)
  • Experience of co-operating in Clinical Research (A/I)
  • A proven track record or the ability to demonstrate potential in the research of child and adolescent psychiatry
  • A higher research degree (e.g. MPhil., MD or PhD)
