Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Consultant Cardiology team on a permanent basis at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement post involving a 10 session commitment each week and the successful candidate will be joining six colleagues who together currently deliver general cardiology services for a population of 200,000 in North East England.

We provide out-patient services to primary care including clinics in General Cardiology, Rapid Access Chest Pain Assessment, Heart Failure, and Structural Heart Disease. In addition, acutely ill cardiac patients are served by an on-call Consultant rota in which the successful candidate will participate, as well as a Consultant of the week model.

Main duties of the job

Our Consultants work alongside an experienced team of Senior Nursing colleagues in Heart Failure, Chest Pain Assessment, post Myocardial Infarction follow-up, and Valve disease. We are fortunate in having an expanding number of skilled Cardiac Physiologists to develop our echocardiogram service and continue to provide our bradycardia pacing service. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop the pacing service and expand into the area of complex device therapy for Heart Failure as well as other service development initiatives. Liaison with our Tertiary Centre at Freeman Hospital will be encouraged where mutually convenient.

The successful candidate will participate in the Clinical Teaching Programme for not only Medical Students from Newcastle University Medical School but also in the Clinical and Educational Supervision of our Post-graduate trainees. In addition, participation in the Trust's Governance Strategy including the Safe-Care programme will be expected.

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust excels in trainee surveys and the Cardiology Department in particular is recognised locally as a place which supports its staff. We want to build on this good reputation for the future and deliver further excellence for our patients.
