Job Description
Consultant Geriatrician with Clinical Academic

The Older People Services Team is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Consultant Geriatrician to provide consultant physician service to older and frail patients at the Royal London Hospital and also take on a role as a clinical academic within the department. In this role, we are looking for a clinician who will work with the existing team to develop front door geriatrics, frailty, and virtual ward. The post holder will work as part of a rolling rota providing out of hours consultant cover to Older People's wards.

From the research and academic perspective, this is a unique clinical academic post, and there will be 2.5 PAs allocated within the Job Plan for the successful candidate to lead on research into ageing and frailty in older patients, working collaboratively with colleagues in the wider Trust, QMUL, and particularly the Academic Centre for Healthy Ageing. The expectation would be that a successful applicant would have significant experience and a strong track record in research. They would take on the role as departmental research lead and help further the department's academic aspirations as well as working with other geriatricians and researchers in the wider Trust.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to take on the following roles and responsibilities:

  1. Comprehensive geriatric assessment of patients triaged to the department through acute ward rounds and reviews.
  2. Regular attendance of the base ward multidisciplinary board round to review flow and discharge planning when on the wards.
  3. Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Trust to develop a service model in keeping with best practice.
  4. Close working with colleagues in the emergency department, acute medicine, and specialist medicine to ensure appropriate patients are transferred to and managed within the department.
  5. Always have regard to the clinical and quality standards set out within Trust guidelines, participating in clinical governance and working closely with other professionals to provide comprehensive care in and out of hospital. This will include liaison with general practice and community services regarding management of patients with chronic conditions.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of date of advisory appointments committee
  • Relevant CCT in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine or equivalent (CESR or European Community Rights if GMC registered or CCT date within 6 months of date of advisory appointments committee)
  • Higher Research Degree
