Job Description
Consultant Psychiatrist - Rehabilitation Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board

The post provides specialist psychiatric rehabilitation expertise to the Outreach and Recovery Team (ORT) currently serving the Rhondda and Taff areas and which works on Assertive Outreach principles. The post holder will also be responsible for the Cefn Yr Afon Unit, an 18-bedded mixed gender rehabilitation facility working on Community Rehabilitation Unit principles in Bridgend.

Main duties of the job
  1. The post holder will be required to liaise with other senior clinicians as and when necessary.
  2. Provide clinical psychiatric rehabilitation expertise and leadership to a defined multidisciplinary outreach and recovery team and an inpatient rehabilitation team.
  3. Provide specialist assessment and clinical management of patients aged 18 and over with mental health problems under the ORT and inpatients at Cefn Yr Afon.
  4. Provide medical liaison and advice regarding patients to local consultants and GPs as necessary.

Job responsibilities
  1. Provide supervision for the Specialty doctor and core trainee, and to a Specialty Training Registrar if the post holder is approved as an Educational Supervisor and if an ST is allocated to the team.
  2. Liaise effectively with members of the team, other services within the Health Board, general practitioners and other agencies.
  3. Contribute to the management of the service by attendance at appropriate committees and meetings, by involvement in audit and by taking on specific management roles which may, from time to time, be agreed.
  4. Play an active role in the education and training of medical, nursing and other staff.
  5. Maintain their professional knowledge base and competency by involvement in continuing professional development (CPD) and to take part in the Wales Revalidation Process which includes annual appraisals for the purposes of revalidation.
  6. Arrange cross cover with the other rehabilitation and sector consultants.
  7. Take part in the consultant on-call rota within the Mental Health Directorate.
  8. Undertake responsibilities under the Mental Health Act as a s.12 approved doctor and as an Approved Clinician.
  9. Undertake responsibilities under the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010.
Person Specification Knowledge and Experience
  • Comprehensive training and experience in psychiatry.
  • Higher training experience in psychiatry.
  • Experience of acting as s12(2) doctor or Responsible Clinician.
Qualifications and Eligibility
  • Current GMC registration.
  • MRC Psych or equivalent.
  • S.12 (2) Approval.
  • Approved Clinician Approval.
  • Additional postgrad Qualification.
Skills and Abilities
  • Competence in current assessment and treatment.
  • Competence in risk assessment and management.
  • Understanding of relevant clinical legal and policy issues.
  • Computing Skills.
