Job Overview

The Decontamination Services Hub within East Lancashire Hospitals requires decontamination technicians to work mainly within the Hospital Endoscopy Decontamination Services and at times within the Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit (HSDU).

You will be responsible for providing sterile surgical instruments, scopes, surgical supplies, and clean laundry and linen. Our services are used by the Trust's many wards, departments, and operating theatres. We also provide a service to external healthcare providers. These supplies are essential for good patient care.

Main Duties of the Job

The department has a Quality Management System, work procedures, and standard procedures. All work takes place to a high standard, quickly and accurately to meet the demands of operating theatres, wards, and departments.

  • Receipting of Medical Devices - ranging from basic instrument trays to complex Theatre Instrumentation.
  • Follow any Media Instructions displayed by the tracking and traceability system.
  • Pre-Wash Inspection/Scanning of all relevant Medical Devices.
  • Place all relevant items through the Soaking Process.
  • Load and scan Items onto the relevant Washer Loading Racks.
  • Manually Wash items that cannot be placed through an automated Wash Cycle.
  • Operating the washer/disinfectors/Automatic Endoscope Reprocessor.
  • Unloading the Washer Disinfectors/Automatic Endoscope Reprocessor in the Clean Room.
  • Disassembling and reassembling complex theatre instruments.
  • Packing tray contents as per checklist and relevant guidance.
  • Loading, operating, and unloading sterilisers.
  • Follow Product Release procedures to enable Medical Devices to be dispatched.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Level 2, GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English.
  • Evidence of completing further training and development.
Experience
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Work in a factory or packing role.
  • Work in a healthcare environment.
  • Work in a cleaning role.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Ability to understand and carry out a range of work procedures.
  • Able to work quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to count, record numbers, and follow detailed work instructions.
