Geotechnical Engineer

We are currently seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer on Vancouver Island. This role will be based in Victoria, BC.

Your role within the team:

  • Candidates should have the right flare and ability that will help us develop and expand our geotechnics capability by building on the existing portfolio of our growing, flexible and outward looking team that can tackle work across a broad spectrum of sectors such as electrical and pipeline grids, infrastructure, geohazards and flood protection.
  • Undertake geotechnical assessments, complex analysis, design calculations and detailed designs with efficient use of specialized software such as GeoStudio, RocScience, and LPile.
  • Undertake geotechnical investigations of both soil and bedrock including planning, permitting, and implementation to balance the needs of the client and engineering requirements of the project.
  • Develop client relationships and internal company networks.
  • Support senior leadership with field evaluations, manage and contribute to geotechnical investigations and undertake design assessments and complex analysis calculations.
  • Understand construction drawings and design reports to support construction and provide guidance and troubleshooting for QA field testing and performance of materials such as soil, bedrock and concrete.
  • Analyze and prepare recommendations and reports for projects relating to foundation design, infrastructure, shoring, retaining walls, slope stability, ground improvement, settlement and deformation analysis, screening level seismic and liquefaction assessments, road structure design, dikes and dams, materials testing, and other geotechnical related projects.
  • Adhere to rules and procedures that ensure health, safety and environment as well as prevention of workplace incidents.
  • Furthermore, in a context of continuous improvement, be proactive in improving health, safety & environment rules and procedures to prevent potential hazards related to your work.

The ideal candidate:

  • Degree in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering.
  • Preferably 6 to 12 years of experience in Geotechnical Engineering with Project Management experience.
  • Either has or is eligible for a Professional Engineering License (P.Eng.) in British Columbia and is currently in good standing.
  • Proven experience of acting in an independent intermediate geotechnical role in a fast-moving engineering consultancy environment.
  • Geotechnical experience in one or more of the following sectors: highways, rail, electrical infrastructure, government (federal, provincial, municipal), industrial, mining, and commercial.
  • Project management - experience and understanding of the needs and approaches to the engineering consultancy and design markets, including relationships with clients, and work planning.
  • Proven geotechnical design experience including application of Design Standards and Guidelines in a design and ground investigation environment (familiarity to the BCBC, NBCC, and Bridge Code and asset).
  • Proven geotechnical investigation experience, including planning and implementation.
  • Experienced in geotechnical numerical software (GeoStudios, Rocscience, LPile, Plaxis).
  • Previous experience with both soil and rock would be beneficial.
  • Previous geohazards investigation and flood mitigation would be beneficial.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, technical skills and the ability to support the development of teams.
  • Excellent report writing and proposal writing skills with the ability to peer-review and produce quality deliverables.
  • A willingness to travel on short assignments province wide.
  • A valid driver's license.

Compensation Range:

Expected compensation for this role is between $91,000 - $126,000 annually. Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, location, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.
