ROLE SUMMARY

To advance the organization's mission and vision globally, PAI is hiring a highly-experienced, strategic and dynamic Managing Director, International based in Europe. This is an executive leadership position that will develop and oversee PAI's strategic directions, engagements and operations outside of the US, working in collaboration with Executive Team members who are responsible for PAI's overall partnerships and fundraising, programs and research, public policy and operations. Over time, the Managing Director will recruit and manage a diverse global team, and deliver measurable international results that align with PAI's theory of change.

Reporting into the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Managing Director will ensure that PAI widens the diversity of voices charting the future of AI by building bridges across regions and jurisdictions to advance the responsible and safe governance of AI and respectfully engaging with regional perspectives to advance the development of AI that meets local needs through equity, justice and shared prosperity. The Managing Director will engage collaboratively and consultatively externally with our global community of Partners, Policy-Makers and PAI's Board of Directors and, internally, with Executive Team peers and other colleagues across the PAI staff team.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Act as a change agent to advance PAI's global perspective and reach by developing a growth and impact strategy outside of the US in the first six months and a multi-year implementation plan, while ensuring funding aligns with expenses and consulting widely internally and externally to define success for the strategy.
  • Work with the Executive Team to advance partner, program and policy activities in the UK and EU over the next 12 months.
  • Seed new Partner relationships and activity in the Global South by convening at least one outreach event in each of the major regions of the world through 2025.
  • Partner collaboratively to set strategic directions, drive engagement outside of the US and operationalize PAI's impact with peers on the Executive Team who have overall responsibility for their areas of strategic accountability.
  • Present to the Board of Directors on PAI's mission outside of the US and support the CEO in building a more globally diverse Board of Directors.
  • Work with the entire PAI organization to extend the reach and impact of PAI's efforts outside of the US globally.
  • Inspire innovation, excellence, and expansive global thinking when considering opportunities across the organization and support a more proactive pursuit of partners both nationally and globally.
  • Oversee the creation of regional convenings for steering committees and working groups to ensure PAI "walks the talk" of being globally inclusive.
  • Leverage clear leadership directives to drive measurable impact and achieve performance goals.
  • Shape and nurture the profile of the organization through both external (public, media, Partner community) and internal (Board, staff) relationships.
  • Represent the organization and its progress at conferences and other public forums to maintain visibility and credibility within the broader AI community.
  • Serve as one of the public ambassadors of PAI; engage with media, policymakers, PAI's partner community, and other external stakeholders.
  • Recruit, manage, and develop a remote, high-performing international team by providing mentorship, professional growth opportunities, and leadership in achieving departmental and organizational goals.
  • Set clear and measurable targets and monitor PAI's performance in order to ensure organization-wide accountability to our mission outside of the US.
  • Lead the resourcing, budgeting, and responsible financial management of PAI's initiatives outside of the US while ensuring they align with PAI's theory of change, advance the annual Business Plan, and support sustainable growth.
  • Establish and implement performance metrics related to PAI's activities outside of the US, including reach, funding growth, and programmatic impact; regularly report and share updates on these metrics to key audiences, including but not limited to PAI's Board of Directors, Executive Team, broader PAI staff team, Partners, and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Provide a healthy and collaborative remote work environment that values diversity and inclusion and establishes PAI's Values of trust, justice, respect and compassion.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in tech-related international relations, with a record of accomplishment leading a team.
  • Masters degree or higher in related discipline preferred.
  • Strategic thinking abilities with a track record of successfully partnering with a CEO, Executive Team and Board of Directors.
  • Skilled as an outstanding coach, mentor, and motivator of professionals, with a dedication to hiring, retaining, and developing outstanding and diverse talent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge regarding the history, status, and likely trajectories of the constellation of technologies that are referred to as AI.
  • Professional credibility and maturity to effectively engage and build authentic relationships, including the ability to build trust and consensus, and to influence widely diverse stakeholders, spanning multiple sectors.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills that translate into multiple environments ranging from internal to external audiences.
  • Highly experienced in international, multi-stakeholder settings, including convening stakeholders with differing perspectives to deliberate complex issues.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully delivering high-profile, cross-departmental projects.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
  • Based in UK or EU country with fluency in English and at least one other European-based language, e.g. French or German.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally, work virtually and manage a team remotely.
