Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world.
Decarbonization can apply to a nation, a region, a city, a district, an organization, an infrastructure asset, a building or a product. We work with our clients to help them understand and minimize their impacts by preparing baselines and net zero strategies and targets, developing whole life cycle reduction pathways and supporting implementation. This can involve devising new policies, innovative business models, introducing new technology, training and cultural programmes, to accelerate and manage the complexity presented by the transition.
Shaped by our engineering heritage and informed by our wide range of complementary technical skills, we offer rigorous environmental assessments and management practice to inform and communicate a clear understanding of the environmental issues and opportunities.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a self-assured and passionate Principal Carbon Consultant, with knowledge in EIA, carbon foot printing and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for major infrastructure projects (including rail, highways, aviation, etc.). In this role, you will be the technical steer for infrastructure carbon assessments and carbon reduction strategies. You will manage client relationships and projects, providing direct mitigation advice to a broad range of clients across infrastructure sectors. An appreciation of the UK's net zero targets and carbon budgets will be advantageous, as well as familiarity with best practices in carbon offsetting and the application of guidance such as PAS2080 and Science-Based Targets.
This position can be based in any Arup United Kingdom Office.
You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary Climate Change team and should have a strong appreciation of the links between infrastructure carbon management and carbon accounting at other scales and within other sectors. Awareness of the links between carbon management and climate resilience would be valuable. You will work closely with wider EIA teams and should have good realization of the broad EIA process and the relationships between EIA technical inputs. Development of Environmental Statements for planning and progressing projects through a Development Consent Order (DCO) is considered essential along with familiarity and application of the IEMA Guidance.
This is an opportunity to work on a variety of major infrastructure projects that will shape the future of the UK, ranging from the aviation sector (e.g. Manchester Airport Group, Gatwick Airport) to rail (e.g. HS2 Ltd.), water (e.g. reservoir schemes) and energy (e.g. major solar farms, nuclear and offshore wind). Your role will include carbon modelling and reporting, engaging with design teams around mitigation, as well as opportunities to be involved in more strategic sustainability advice at the corporate level.
Is this role right for you?
We are looking for people with:
- You will hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, etc.). A postgraduate degree would be advantageous.
- You will hold a relevant chartership from a professional institution, such as Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Engineer, etc.
- International, European and UK policy, legislative, regulatory and planning frameworks.
- Carbon assessment standards and guidance, such as PAS 2080, ISO 14064, etc.
- LCA models such as GaBi or SimaPro.
