Purpose

The Principal Examiner ensures that the standards of an externally assessed unit(s)/module(s)/component(s) are maintained and consistent with the unit specification and assessment criteria.

Core Services and Expectations

  1. Act at all times in a way which will not bring Pearson into disrepute.
  2. Read all Pearson policies and guidance prior to undertaking contracted activities.
  3. Respect the confidentiality of centres and learners.
  4. Attend any meetings or training sessions relevant to your role.
  5. Adhere to deadlines and ensure that all work is carried out to the best of your ability.
  6. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in a professional manner.
  7. Have personal IT equipment capable of running Pearson software.
  8. Communicate with Pearson and its centres in a timely manner.
  9. Raise any concerns regarding malpractice or safeguarding issues.

Role Specific Services and Expectations

  1. Ensure timely delivery of your contracted unit(s)/module(s)/component(s).
  2. Update the mark scheme/guidance before the pre-standardisation meeting.
  3. Lead meetings such as pre-standardisation and participate in others.
  4. Select and mark items for validity as agreed.
  5. Mark an allocation of live candidates' responses.
  6. Prepare and collate materials for standardisation.
  7. Support supervisors and Examiners.
  8. Monitor the progress of supervisors/Examiners.
  9. Act as a senior point of escalation across the quality assurance process.
  10. Submit reports on series/candidate performance.

Skills and Competencies

Required

  1. Experience and knowledge of quality assurance and assessment practice.
  2. History of moderation and/or marking a regulated qualification.
  3. Proven ability to provide and co-ordinate training.
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of the specification for your specialist sector.
  5. High level of IT proficiency.
  6. Leadership experience in delivering qualifications.

Experience and Qualifications

Qualifications required to apply for your chosen role at Pearson will depend on the qualification you are delivering.

General Qualifications (e.g. GCSE/A LEVEL)

  1. Degree.
  2. A UK recognised teaching qualification.
