Job Description

This established and successful R&D Tax team are looking for a Manager to join its exciting and growing department. The right candidate will work alongside the senior management team to provide bespoke advice on a range of innovation incentives (grants, R&D tax relief and Patent Box) and prepare client submissions.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Manager, you will work on a broad range of client projects, with the opportunity to develop client relationships, project management and advisory skills. The right candidate can expect to spend around 80% of their working time working closely with team members on engagements with the firm's clients.

The candidate would be expected to manage the delivery of advice to the partner/director for approval and this consists of a balance between reviewing the output from more junior resources in the team and being responsible for the preparation and delivery of client reports direct to the partners/directors.

The candidate will get full exposure to client-facing communication and working on projects all the way from initial engagement through to submission of claims and if needed, defence of those claims under HMRC enquiry.

As Manager, the candidate would also be expected to play an important role in the development of their peers and more junior colleagues on a day-to-day basis, both technically and professionally.

The firm's clients consist largely of OMBs and large corporates and as such advisory projects regularly consist of the preparing R&D tax claims, supporting R&D tax studies and liaising with other members of the wider tax team to deliver reports relating to innovation incentives. A significant amount of our advice is delivered in the form of written reports and the candidate will be required to both write up technical project descriptions in a clear and coherent manner as well and review work prepared by more junior members of the team and ensure it is accurate prior to delivery to the partner.

The ideal candidate should be client focused with a solid knowledge base and experience of aspects of R&D tax relief and Corporation Tax compliance procedures that will allow them to supervise members of the team who deal with the areas.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise:

The role relies on extensive written and verbal communication, performing detailed data analysis and preparing complex financial calculations. As part of a team working with multiple clients concurrently, the candidate must demonstrate an ability to manage a project portfolio, work collaboratively with colleagues or independently without close supervision, and be goal-oriented

This is client-facing role, engaging with our clients' technical and financial leadership. Acting within a regulated professional services environment the candidate should be committed to delivering high-quality service and advice, adhering to policies and processes.

  • Science or technology background
  • Ability to understand and communicate highly technical scientific or technological concepts
  • Advanced Excel and Word skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • A good team player
  • Experience of mentoring and developing more junior team members
  • Enthusiastic and willing to learn
  • Organised and motivated
  • A driven person who will take ownership of tasks and drive to completion
  • Ability to prioritise work
  • Ability to deliver work to an agreed timescale and budget
  • Ability to generate creative ideas both for technical work and business development purposes
  • Ability to build personal rapport with clients and to win their trust
