About the Team

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) is the world's oldest and the UK's leading defence and security think tank. Its mission is to inform, influence and enhance public debate on a safer and more stable world. RUSI is a research-led institute, producing independent, practical and innovative analysis to address today's complex challenges.

This position sits in RUSI's Cyber and Tech Research group, which seeks to shine a light on UK and international cyber and technology issues. We take what can sometimes be complex and technical subjects and aim to communicate it in plain language, for non-technical audiences. Our research informs and enriches policy approaches by developing a strong evidence base that is available to policymakers and practitioners. Our research agenda is structured around the following themes: cyber strategy and statecraft, cyber threats and resilience, and disruptive technologies.

Main purpose of post

RUSI's Cyber and Tech research group is recruiting a Research Analyst who will carry out general project activities and research functions on a number of research projects across our core portfolio.

The successful candidate will support the delivery of research activities and outputs, design and delivery of research events, project reporting, bid development and communications and stakeholder management.

Key tasks

  • Help to collect primary source data for a range of projects, taking part in research interviews and producing transcriptions from audio recordings of interviews;
  • Help to collect secondary source data for a range of projects;
  • Assist the research team in conducting thematic analysis of secondary and primary source data, including interviews, workshops and focus groups;
  • Produce and publish evidence-led research outputs;
  • Convene and participate in multi-stakeholder events and engagements that bring together members of the cyber security and technology communities;
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of research events, project management and reporting, and development of new bids;
  • Support communications and stakeholder management activities, including stakeholder mapping, outreach, social media and press releases.

The above list of duties is not exhaustive. The post holder will be required to undertake such duties that may reasonably be expected within the scope and grade of the role.

Minimum Requirements

  • Confidence in using Office365 and other relevant software.
  • Prior research experience on cyber security or disruptive technologies;
  • Experience of managing research projects, including financial management;
  • Knowledge and experience of working in international affairs/security or a think tank related environment;
  • Experience of solution-oriented thinking, linking research to policy recommendations or solutions;
  • Evidence of previous policy publications;
