We're recruiting for a Senior Economist to join our Public Policy team. This role requires a depth of professional economist experience and offers the opportunity to influence decision-making across various topics relevant to the BBC.

The role can be based in any of our main Hubs with some travel to London. The BBC operates a hybrid working culture, with a mix of office and home-based working.

The Public Policy team manages the BBC's relationship with key external stakeholders and leads the development of public policy positions. The Economics team provides analytical and economic expertise to support projects across three broad areas: i) regulation and competition; ii) public policy; and iii) conducting research that helps deepen the BBC's understanding of the economic and social value it provides.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the BBC's Chief Economist, you will apply your creativity and expertise to develop and deliver high-quality analysis, leading projects across a wide range of areas, including:

  • Undertaking market impact analysis and public value assessments as part of regulatory processes;
  • Addressing key public policy questions facing the BBC;
  • Furthering the BBC's understanding of the public value it delivers to audiences and society.

This may include conducting in-house research and analysis as well as managing consultancy projects that lead to published reports and outputs.

Alongside the rest of the team, you will help shape our workplan, bringing your insights and ideas to bear.

The role has a high level of exposure to senior colleagues across the BBC, requiring collaboration with various divisions including Legal, Audiences, Content, R&D, and Corporate Affairs.

You will cultivate external relationships, including with the academic community, to support our work and enhance our understanding of the media and creative sector.

Are you the right candidate?

The successful applicant will have the following attributes:

  • Experience as a professional economist, supported by a qualification in economics;
  • Evidence of quantitative skills including Excel-based modelling, econometrics, or other technical skills;

  • Experience in stakeholder management and advising senior management;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
