The role:

You will provide technical expert knowledge to the Head of Future Power System and lead the delivery of a range of projects relating to energy system scenario planning and lead the delivery of a range of technical modelling projects that will support decision makers in enabling a power system ready for net zero.

  1. Developing and leading technical modelling programmes for National and European studies and providing insights for the relevant reports.
  2. Supporting the model development to enhance scenario development frameworks aligned with government policies.
  3. Provide technical leadership to drive modelling changes that will enhance our agility and flexibility in development of long-term scenarios for Northern Ireland.
  4. Assist your manager by working closely with IT to find the best software and hardware solutions for techno-economic modelling requirements.
  5. Representing SONI at various internal and external fora in respect of technical studies for jurisdictional and all-island projects.

What we're looking for:

  1. University degree in engineering, economics, mathematics or other equivalent degree, with a minimum of 5 years power system industry and electricity market expertise and experience.
  2. Proven advanced technical knowledge of energy systems, demand forecasting, interconnection and storage technology.
  3. Proven experience in modelling tools used in energy system scenario planning.
  4. Proven experience in advanced use of Excel for data analysis and macro / Python coding development.
  5. Advanced problem solving and analysis skills.
  6. Understanding of how the SEM operates and how to model it would be desirable.
