Job Description

Who We Look For
At Goldman Sachs, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is responsible for the resilience and reliability of our firm's most critical platform services and ensures they meet the requirements of our internal and external users. We look for software engineers who are motivated to collaborate with our businesses to build and run resilient and reliable production systems, which can evolve and adapt to changes in our fast-paced, global business environment. Our teams are composed of varying levels of experience and backgrounds, from new grads to industry veterans. Previous experience in the SRE space is not a requirement; we are happy to consider candidates who feel passionate about software engineering and distributed systems in general.

Goldman Sachs runs the majority of its systems on Linux with a blend of on-premise and cloud. We run a mix of open source, vendor licensed, and internally developed tools to perform functions such as system configuration management, provisioning, software deployment, logging, tracing, SLOs, and monitoring. You'll learn these tools and have opportunities to improve them.

Additionally, SREs keep an ever-watchful eye on our systems' capacity and performance through trend analysis, testing, and on-call duties.

Responsibilities
  • Balance feature development velocity and reliability with well-defined service level objectives (SLOs).
  • Collaborate with other teams to onboard them onto SRE-owned platforms.
  • Develop, support, administer and consult in the firm's (primary business-critical trading) infrastructure. This includes platform management and capacity planning.
  • Create and support automation solutions to improve the reliability of the platform and to increase the productivity of the team.
  • Adhere to and drive SRE disciplines and processes across the global team.
  • Provide essential day-to-day support for a (massive scale, distributed) system.
  • Assess monitoring & alert signals to determine impact and risk to the business and help steer the incident management process and a blameless post-mortem culture.
  • The successful candidate will have outstanding verbal and written communications, a natural ability to learn in a fast-paced environment, and will be a self-starter with plenty of initiative.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree in computer science or engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: Go, Python, C, C++, or Java, and a willingness to learn new languages and programming paradigms.
  • Experience with algorithms, data structures, and software design.
  • Experience with running software in production environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring stacks.
  • Experience working in the lifecycle of large distributed systems.
  • Ability to handle multiple ongoing assignments and be able to work independently in addition to contributing as part of a highly collaborative and globally dispersed team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with network, storage, cloud, sharding, and running applications at scale.
  • Experience with Unix-like (Linux/FreeBSD) operating systems internals.
  • Previous experience in a blameless SRE-driven environment would be a benefit.
