Specialist Biomedical Scientist Night Worker

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic band 6 Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and dedicated Blood Sciences team at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. NWLP operates as a hub and spoke model for the provision of pathology services, with Chelsea and Westminster operating as one of the spoke sites.

Applications are sought from self-motivating individuals who are currently registered with the HCPC. A minimum of 2 years post registration experience in a Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory with demonstrable morphology skills is required. Completion of the Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice and/or the IBMS Specialist Diploma will be essential. You should also demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills in addition to possessing competent IT skills.

Please note for this role - we will be giving an extra £4,000 on top of your salary payable in six terms monthly periods as part of our recruitment and retention premium (subject to and conditions being met).

Main duties of the job
  • Validation and verification of complex Blood Sciences pathology reports,
  • Preparation and provision of blood and blood components to clinicians who have prescribed transfusion care of their patients.
  • Maintaining complex analytical equipment,
  • Morphology and malaria screening.
  • Perform group and antibody check on ANC patients at booking and 28 weeks,
  • Participate in the Quality Management System as directed by the Senior BMS.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Person Specification Education
  • Biomedical Science degree or equivalent which is acceptable by the IBMS /HPC for registration
  • HCPC Registration and clear understanding of Code of Conduct and Professional Standards of the HCPC
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma or demonstrate the equivalent depth and breadth of knowledge in the relevant discipline evidenced by competency documents or equivalent
  • Actively involved in Continuing Professional Development.
Skills
  • Good practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work
  • Good interpretive skills at bench level
  • Able to prioritise work according to demand and urgency.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office or similar
  • Customer Service experience
Experience
  • A good working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline
  • Use of Pathology computer systems
  • Previous experience in a large busy laboratory

Salary: £44,806 to £53,134 a year inclusive pro rata.
