What you'll be doing:

As a Support Engineer Apprentice you would be looking at everything that is involved in this, from identifying what maintenance could be required, to the tools and spares needed to carry out the maintenance and understanding the reliability and availability of the equipment on-board.

The role of Support Engineer Apprentice within BAE Systems involves the application of engineering and logistic principles to develop solutions to support Astute, Dreadnought and SSNA Class of Submarines and there operations. Problem solving skills would be beneficial to the role as well as a desire to understand how engineering systems and components work and can be broken down in to their repairable parts.

As a Support Engineer Apprentice, the role will involve developing & applying your understanding of a range of Supportability Engineering Integrated Product Support (IPS) processes, tools, systems and techniques. Undertaking a range of different engineering activities aimed at developing the knowledge, skills and behaviors to meet the Engineering Technician - Technical Support apprenticeship standard while rotating around the different teams on the floorplate to develop into a well-rounded Support Engineer. On this three and a half year Apprenticeship you'll acquire the necessary skills to ensure that the equipment that we design and support can be operated and maintained safely, effectively and efficiently. Please note that this apprenticeship is predominantly office-based.

During the duration of the apprenticeship the main duties undertaken will involve;

Conduct Design for Support - Ensuring what is designed can be supported.
Conduct Availability and Reliability analysis - Using modelling tools and techniques to assess the reliability and availability of equipment's and systems.
Conduct Reliability Centered Maintenance - Using approved industry toolsets to assess what might break and what needs maintenance and when.
Create Initial Support Packages - Ensuring that the right Spares & Tools are in the right locations, at the right time, in the right condition and with the correct quantities.
Production of digital technical information that is complete, coherent and consistent -Supporting operations, maintenance, diagnosis, repair and disposal or equipment through-life.
Configuration Management of data and products - Understanding what you have and in what condition.

The Submarines team:

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.

Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
