Scientific Officer - Metabolomics Core Facility (Absence cover)

Scientific Services and Support
EMBL Heidelberg

We are Europe's research laboratory for the life sciences - an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1900 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

The Metabolomics Core Facility (MCF) at EMBL Heidelberg, led by Michael Zimmermann, offers cutting-edge services for the analysis of metabolites and lipids to internal and external users. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry systems, including an Orbitrap Exploris 240 and a QTRAP 6500+, coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), allowing to perform both untargeted and targeted analyses of small molecules in various biological matrices.

We are looking for an additional person to join the team for the duration of at least one year to cover parental leave and to help the team establish new metabolomics protocols and workflows.

Your role

The Metabolomics Core Facility is looking for a Scientific Officer to join the team. The key responsibilities will include:

  1. Performing sample preparation and analyte extraction from diverse sample types (e.g., cells, bacteria, tissues, biofluids).
  2. Managing incoming samples, metabolite and lipid standards, and spectral libraries.
  3. Providing organizational and technical support within the facility, including inventory management, documentation, and lab maintenance.
  4. Preparing and performing LC-MS experiments, including mobile phase preparation, basic system maintenance, and data acquisition.

We are seeking excellent candidates with experience. Depending on the experience and qualifications, the seniority of the position will be adjusted.

Contract duration: 1 year (absence cover)

Grading: 4 or 5; depending on qualifications and experience

Minimum Requirements
  1. An appropriate undergraduate or advanced degree from an accredited university or technical school (CTA/MTA/PTA) or equivalent experience in analytical sciences, chemistry or related disciplines.
  2. At least one year of hands-on experience in mass spectrometry or an analytical laboratory setting, preferably with LC-MS.
  3. Experience with diverse sample types (e.g., cells, bacteria, tissues, biofluids).
  4. Strong communication skills in English and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
You might also have
  1. Practical experience in either metabolomics, lipidomics, or small molecule applications using mass spectrometry.
  2. Experience working in a service facility environment.
  3. Experience or interest to learn about data processing of targeted or untargeted metabolomics datasets.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.
